White wins this ending by using his King aggressively. The King heads for c6, an ideal King and Pawn position, since it wins with or without the move.

  1. Kf6!

The only move to win. Moving 1. c5 instead allows 1. ... Kf7, 2. Kg5 Ke6 and Black will win the Pawn.

After the actual move, White has the opposition and by maintaining it makes the winning process child's play.

  1. ...      Kf8
  2. Kf6   Ke8
  3. Ke6  Kd8
  4. Kd6

Black never gets a chance to approach the Pawn.

  1. ...      Kc8
  2. Kc6

An endgame position worth remembering, since White wins no matter whose turn it is to move.

  1. ... Kb8

If instead 5. ... Kd8, 6. Kb7 (seizing control of the Pawn's queening square) Ke7, 7. c5, and the Pawn can not be stopped.

  1. Kd7   Kb7
  2. c5     Kb8
  3. c6     Ka7
  4. c7

White wins.
